Keratosis: Symptoms and Causes
Keratosis is caused by an excess of keratin, a natural protein that maintains the health and structure of your hair, skin, and nails. This excess blocks hair follicles, resulting in small white and red bumps on the thighs, cheeks, and buttocks. Researchers believe that people with dry skin and eczema are more likely to develop Keratosis.
If these symptoms sound familiar, know that you are not alone. In fact, 50-80% of teenagers and about 40% of adults experience Keratosis. Although the condition cannot be cured, fortunately, there are many remedies that can significantly reduce the symptoms.
Home Treatments for Keratosis
- Moisturize: After showering or bathing, gently pat your skin dry with a towel and moisturize while your body is still damp. This helps lock moisture into the skin.
- Choose the Right Body and Shower Products: To avoid irritating the skin, use gentle and fragrance-free bath and body products. Avoid harsh soaps and plastic loofahs (which can harbor bacteria on your skin).
- Water Temperature: Opt for warm showers and baths instead of hot ones. Hot water can dry out your skin, especially during the winter months.
- Wear Looser Clothing: Tight clothing causes more friction against the skin.
- Exfoliate Regularly: Invest in high-quality exfoliating gloves, such as the "Natural Exfoliating Glove for Removing Built-Up Dirt and Toxins," to gently remove excess dead skin once a week. Avoid excessive pressure, as it can worsen the condition.
